On February 6, 2023, a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Gaziantep Turkey and the northern provinces of Syria. The damage has been immense as countless people have been injured and displaced and thousands have lost their lives. We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life due to the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. In Syria, the humanitarian situation is dire. With more than 90 percent of people living in poverty, years of conflict, economic deterioration, COVID-19, cholera, unseasonal weather conditions and now earthquakes have left people in dire need of humanitarian assistance.
The areas hit by the earthquake are hosting hundreds of thousands of displaced people. We teamed up with the Canadian Red Cross to donate to those who need it the most. Thanks to the generosity of Canadian Red Cross donors, the Canadian Government has matched their goal of $10 million as of February 12, 2023. The Red Cross Red Crescent is working to deliver emergency relief to the people impacted by the earthquake as quickly as possible.
